We all know that, when a business
closes a facility, it greatly reduces its
expenses. However, the greatest savings do not come from the
facility closing but rather from the employees who lose their jobs.
In schools, the situation is different. The children still have to be taught,
administered and counseled. We can't reduce the population of people who are
directly involved in the education of the children. Utility bills including
heat, lighting, telephone and water will, by and large, follow the school's
population to its new home. And the maintenance due to occupation of the
facilities will move with the kids, and may even increase! So closing a school
doesn't really save as much as you might think. I believe that, in many cases,
the reduction in costs by closing a school are probably exceeded by the
increased cost of transportation.
Add to that the growth in the student population, and the idea of closing
schools seems far-fetched.
I do not support closing and
selling schools as a cost savings.
